The Spring Fiesta in the Park, now in its 26th year, is held annually during the second weekend in April. More than 150,000 residents and visitors to Orlando visit Lake Eola Park during this weekend to view and purchase arts and crafts from artists from across Central Florida.
Goals: Each year the City of Orlando’s Office of Communications and Neighborhood Relations graphics team updates the artwork that is used in the marketing and advertising of the event. Being a signature event from our office, I usually encourage the designer assigned to this project to do something fun and outside-the-box. Bret, inspired by recent trends in hand lettering, sketched all of this year’s design typography and illustrations by hand. He began by sketching the wording with a pencil and then traced each letter with archival ink pens. He also took elements from the Lake Eola parkscape and hand sketched them into the design.
Once the sketching was complete, he scanned the design in as a 600dpi TIFF file, and traced the sketch in Adobe Illustrator as a vector so that the design could be scaled to any size needed. The result was a fun, creative poster that highlights what the event is all about: local artists.
The completed design was used online on the City of Orlando’s website, Cox Media’s radio and event partner’s sites as well as all of the City’s and event partners social media platforms. Posters were also printed and distributed throughout the City.
