Graphics Supervisor/Graphic Designer: Jen Hiatt
Client: Office of Communications – Events Team
About the event: Mayor Buddy Dyer and his Veterans Advisory Council will honor the courageous men and women of the armed forces at the 15th annual City of Orlando Veterans Day Parade in Downtown Orlando. Three members of the American Gold Star Mothers will serve as parade grand marshals. The group serves veterans and their families by providing emotional support and properly honoring those lost while serving in the armed forces.
About the graphics: Fun fact, this was the second event flyer done for this event. The initial design showcased a photograph from the previous years event – a photo in which the Veterans were lined up in the incorrect order.
We had to scrap the initial design (and the idea of using any photos, as they were all incorrect) at the last minute, which led us to go with a super simple, typography-heavy event flyer. We wanted to invoke patriotism using the elements of a flag (stars and stripes), rather than a flag itself and we had to do it quickly. I actually ended up liking this version much more than the original – the design was super clean, easy to read, patriotic without being over-the-top and lent itself to resizing for promotion.
The completed design was used online on the City of Orlando’s website, Channel 13’s TV and event partner’s sites as well as all of the City’s and event partners social media platforms. Posters were also printed and distributed throughout the City.
